In the Anime, it is Pikachu, though Ash was thinking of picking the 3 original Kanto starters, Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur. In Pokemon Fire red, and Leaf green, Ash get to pick the 3 original Kanto starters. But at Pokemon Yellow, you get Pikachu, like the anime.
