Interestingly, that is not the official nickname for Montana: it is officially the "Treasure State," because of its rich mineral reserves. But Montana has many mountains and beautiful scenery, and there was a promotional and tourism campaign there in the 1960s which focused on the scenic views and the clear blue sky the state is known for. That resulted in Montana being called "Big Sky Country" or the "Big Sky State."
