∙ 6y agoThe war began when the Ionian Greek city-states were induced to revolt against Persian rule. The Persians pt it down, but mainland Greek states Eretria and Athens intervened, expanding the Persian response. Persia decided that there would not be peace inside its empire with this external stirring, so determined to bring all the Greek cities under control of a Persian governor.
It began by bribing cities to accept this, but the southern cities refused, so Persia launched an invasion to enforce this. The invasion was defeated and warfare continued for another 30 years until Persia gave up and left the Greek cities to go back to their usual practices of warfare between themselves.
