Rock music began in the late 1950's, and evolved over the next decade. The term rock and roll was originally used to describe the rhythm and blues music of African Americans, but came to describe the variety of music which emerged from the fusion of several musical styles in the 1950's.
Bollywood music is different from other styles. It has a hint of Indian classical. It does not use much rock and metal.

There are 4 basic styles of popular music today. (Country / Rock / Rythm & Bules and Rap). There are many sub-catagories of each. ie.. Alternative Rock, Funk, Hardcore Rock, Soul, & Eletronic Beats / Smushing
Alternative rock
The Fratellis have defined themselves as an indie rock/garage rock band, and they make music that lie in that general genre. Their music from 2005 to 2012 has however evolved significantly.
It is possible to listen to samples of background music online at Sam's Club. They have a wide variety of styles of music. Some of the styles are - Baby, Jewish, Salsa and Surf/Rock. Have fun!
Most modern music evolved from African Americans. Soul and folk evolved into many genres. It began with jazz and then to blues which went to rock. Themes from rock and jazz were used in early hip hop. Folk evolved into country over time. Pop takes elements from all music genres. In this way, slaves influenced almost all modern music..... why would anyone want to know this?
