There are two terms for the same. First is thrombophlebitis and second is phlebothrombosis. When superficial vein of the leg in inflamed, you have thrombophlebitis of the vein. In this the thrombus is fixed to the wall of the vein. In deep vein thrombosis, you call it as phlebothombosis. That is a serious condition. Here from you get the thrombus dislodged and goes to artery of your lungs. That causes pulmonary embolism.
