A battery is an energy storage device (among other things). A solar battery is a term that might generally be used to describe an electrical storage battery that uses solar energy to charge it up. Elements in the same group (column) will exhibit some similar chemical and electrical properties, because their outer electron configurations are the same, for example.
Different elements all have very different properties. However, you can define an element as a substance with only one type of atom in (e.g. only sulphur atoms). If a substance has more than one type of atom in, then it is either a compound or a mixture, depending on whether the elements have bonded.
