Radiation
The only way energy can travel without a medium is by electromagnetic waves, or in other words, photons.
Light actually travels in waves. This is known to be true because there are only 3 ways that energy can be transferred. As you probably already know, light does not need a medium to travel through because it travels through space. Electromagnetic waves are the only form of energy transfer that do not require a medium to travel through.

Radiation
Transferring energy through empty space is called radiation. There are three types of energy transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. Radiation is the only energy transfer that does not require a medium. Radiation is a wave of pure energy; one example of radiation is the sunlight that reaches Earth, which is electromagnetic radiation.
No, energy will transfer between any adjacent bodies, moreover, a medium is not necessary for energy to transfer between objects at all. That would be a little thing called radiation.

All waves can travel from one place to another as long as they have a medium to travel through. The only waves that do not need a medium are electromagnetic waves. When using the word "transfer" though. Waves transfer energy; waves themselves are not transfered they simply travel.
Radiation.Conduction requires contact and convection requires a motive fluid. Radiation only needs a straight line of sight with no intervening medium.

Radiation is the only method of energy transfer that can transfer energy like heat through space.
radiation
Radiation requires neither contact (through which conduction transfers heat) nor mass flow or movement (through which convection transfers heat). Only radiation can take place in a vacuum. Convection and conduction both require a material medium for the heat transfer to occur. Only radiation can transfer thermal energy through the vacuum of space.
