Although the Civil war is commonly thought to have ended in April 1865 when General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, the last battle of the war was fought over a month later in Texas. For all practical purposes the war ended when Lee surrendered to Grant.
