Pigmentation is the process of skin coloration and due to some anomalies in this process white or dark patches appear on the skin. Melanin is substance responsible for skin coloration. Excess of melanin in skin cause the darkening or dark spots in skin. Such situation is termed as hyper-pigmentation. Lack of melanin in skin causes the white patch in skin this thing is termed as depigmentation or hypo-pigmentation in skin. There is more than one skin condition that causes white patch on the skin.

About 1% of people have a condition called vitiligo, which is one cause for loss of pigment. You should see a doctor to get a diagnosis.
