No one. The 2004 film clearly shows the Phantom had lived even after Christine died at the age of 65. The Phantom probably died later of old age because he was older than Christine. In the original novel he died soon after Christine left with Raoul, and he (the Phantom) died of love, because he loved Christine so much but had to let her go.

The Phantom dies from an aging disease and a broken heart from Christine. Her kiss was too much for his heart, soul could handle. He lets her go be with Raoul, he is stunned that she did not die after kissing him. In the 1800s' to see a corpse or skull meant death. This is why he is so perplexed about Christine, he frets and worries about her this causes his heart to weaken and he dies.
