Maurice Wilkins 1916-2004 He was one of the researchers whose work was a significant contributor to the discovery of the structure of DNA.

Alan MacDiarmid 1927-2007 He discovered and developed electronically conductive polymers Allan Wilson 1936-1991 He developed the biochemistry molecular clock of human evolution, was involved in developing DNA analysis techniques and discovered the mitochondrial DNA record of the origin of modern humans. Beatrice Tinsley nee Hill 1941-1981 She modelled galaxy evolution and how this affects the origin of the universe.

You'd have to start with the Nobel Prize winners, Ernest Rutherford, Chemistry, 1908; Maurice Wilkins, Physiology or Medicine, 1962; and Alan MacDiarmid, Chemistry, 2000.

I'd add Don Merton for his recent work in preserving the Black Robin; Ernest Marsden for his work in Nuclear physics, and Bill Robinson for his work on seismic isolation of buildings and bridges.
