A few famous New Zealand scientists are: Sir Ernest Rutherford. 1871-1937 He discovered that elements can change naturally to lighter elements, that the atom has a nucleus, and split or "dissected" the atom.

Archibald MacIndoe 1900-1960 He developed new plastic surgery techniques, burns treatments and recognized the significance of psychology in healing and recovery. Sir William Pickering. 1910-2004 He was a significant contributor to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Explorer 1, Pioneer IV, Mariner, Ranger and Surveyor space missions. Maurice Wilkins 1916-2004 He was one of the researchers whose work was a significant contributor to the discovery of the structure of DNA.

Alan MacDiarmid 1927-2007 He discovered and developed electronically conductive polymers Allan Wilson 1936-1991 He developed the biochemistry molecular clock of human evolution, was involved in developing DNA analysis techniques and discovered the mitochondrial DNA record of the origin of modern humans. Beatrice Tinsley nee Hill 1941-1981 She modelled galaxy evolution and how this affects the origin of the universe.
