Who are the player of the play Hamlet?
One of the characters in the play Hamlet is called the "First Player", which means he is an actor. He is the "first" player because he is the leader of the actors who have come to visit Elsinore.
Hamlet thinks Guildenstern is trying to play Hamlet like an instrument because Guildenstern was trying to make Hamlet say things that Guildenstern was told to make him say. So Hamlet says if Guildenstern can play a person like an instrument then he should be able to play the recorder. Hamlet knows he can't play the recorder but he is trying to make a point.
King Hamlet isn't. King Hamlet was. In the play Hamlet, King Hamlet was the previous king of Denmark and father to Prince Hamlet after whom the play is named. At the time the play starts. Hamlet is a play, and within it, there is a play. In Hamlet, Hamlet believes that his uncle murdered his father in order to usurp the throne. Trying to gain evidence to support his belief, Hamlet puts on a play, and during the murder scene, he watches to see how his Uncle reacts. The reason for the play within the play is to see Claudius's reaction to the parts of the play that are mirroring the murder of King Hamlet. King Hamlet's Ghost told Hamlet that Claudius was his murderer but Hamlet feels the need to investigate it. By having Horatio watch the King's reaction, he can judge if Claudius was actually the killer.
