In a word, fun! The emperors or high ranking officials or a triumphing general would give public banquets for all to enjoy, rich and poor. Tables laden with food and goodies were lined up in the various fora. Of course seating positions were arranged by class, but everyone was welcome to enjoy themselves.
In private homes, a feast for some special celebration was about the same but naturally on a smaller scale. The dinner courses would be the best available, with possibly what we would consider odd-ball dishes, such as stuffed door mouse and sow's udder stuffed with meats and spices or roasted peacock. At private fests there was always entertainment such as dancers, jugglers, acrobats and wrestlers. It was a custom, that after a feast, the guests took home a token or souvenir of the dinner. And it was not considered rude for a guest to bring a large napkin with him, in which to wrap leftovers to take home.
