Both the 1951 animated Disney movie and the 2010 Tim Burton film are based on two books by Lewis Carroll; 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There'

Confusingly, these books are also sometimes jointly referred to as 'Alice in Wonderland', and, even more confusingly, sometimes just the first book, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' is referred to as 'Alice in Wonderland'.

Alice in Wonderland was originally a story made up by Lewis Carroll, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, to entertain three little girls on a rowing trip.

One of the girls, Alice Liddell, loved the story so much that she asked Carroll to write it down for her, which he did.

A publisher friend of Carroll's saw what he had written and encouraged Carroll to have it published.

Lewis Carroll edited and expanded the original story and published it with the title Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

The book was a huge success so Carroll wrote a sequel, Through the Looking Glass.

Both books were very popular and many film and stage versions of the books were made, the most famous being Disney's 1951 animated film, Alice in Wonderland, which was mainly based on the first book, but also included material from the second.

Most recently, Tim Burton has made a film also called Alice in Wonderland, which acts as a sequel to the two books, as it is set some years after events in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

The inspiration for 'Alice's Adventures Underground' (the first version of the story) first came from Alice Lidell. Charles Ludwidg Dogeson (the creator of the story who went by the pen name of 'Lewis Carrol') first thought of the ideas for the novel on a row boat to a picnik outside of his town. On the row boat was his close friend's three daughters. It was said that out of the three Lidell children, Alice was Dogeson's favorite. On the row boat, Alice Lidell asked Dogeson for a story, and there, 'Alice's Adventurse Underground' was born. After hearing the story, Alice insisted that Dodgeson write it down for her, and so many months later, and after many revisions, he did.
