Jim Davis was trying to get syndicate interest in his comic strip 'Gnorm the Gnat' but was told that people do not relate to insects. After studying successful comic strips to find out what people did relate to, Davis realized that while there were lots of comics about dogs, there were none about cats and so he created Garfield. Garfield is named after Jim Davis' grandfather, James Garfield Davis.
