Charles Babbage an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer founded the concept of a programmable computer. He designed (but never completed) a machine called a Difference engine in 1822. He developed his ideas with a new design he called the Analytical engine which he worked on until his death in 1871.
