Joan of Arc was born in 1412 to well-to-do peasants from the village of Domrémy in Champagne. Deeply religious, Joan experienced visions and came to believe that her favorite saints had commanded her to free France and have the dauphin crowned as king. In February 1429, Joan made her way to the dauphin's court, where her sincerity and simplicity persuaded Charles to allow her to accompany a French army to Orléans. Apparently inspired by faith of the peasant girl, the French armies found new confidence in themselves and liberated Orléans, changing the course of the war. Within a few weeks, the entire Loire valley had been freed of the English. In July of that same year, fulfilling Joan's other task, the dauphin was crowned king of France and became Charles VII. In accomplishing the two commands of her angelic voices, Joan had brought the war to a decisive turning point. Joan of Arc's accomplishments proved decisive. Although the war dragged on for another two decades, defeats of English armies in Normandy and Aquitaine ultimately led to French victory.

Joan of Arc was a Major general in the french army.

She rallied the French troops to victory when they had reached their lowest point. (Apex)

Joan of Arc, by her leadership and inspiration in leading the French troops to raise the Siege of Orleans by the English (May, 1429), was instrumental in eventually expelling the English from all of France. Joan's success at Orleans changed the tide of that war. It was practically the first French victory over the English in the whole war and lead to Joan's conducting of the dauphin, the French crown prince, to Rheims where he was crowned King Charles VII of France. If the English had taken Orleans, they would have controlled all of France and had an English king become the king of France.

Joan was later captured and sold to the English, who had her burnt at the stake as a heretic in a mock trial they had set up with French clergy partial to England. This trial was overturned in 1455 by a Nullification Trial convened by

the Pope at King Charles's request and Joan was declared innocent.

In 1535 Charles VII joined forces with the Burgundians at the Treaty of Arras and this resulted in the eventual defeat and expulsion of the English from France, thus ending the Hundred Years War (1456).
