Leo Szilard invented the atomic bomb in 1933 in London and patented it in 1934. No materials were known at the time to make it work however.

In 1938 Otto Frisch in Germany discovered that Uranium-235 would fission. This was the missing ingredient to Szilard's invention.

However It was not until 1945 that the Manhattan Project was actually able to build one. This took thousands of workers.
