The Democratic party nominees were: Lewis Cass, Levi Woodbury, James Buchanan, and Martin Van Buren; Lewis Cass won even though Martin Van Buren was former president. The Free Soil nominees were: Martin Van Buren, John P. Hale, Joshua R. Giddings, Charles Francis Adams, Sr.; Martin Van Buren won.
Louis Napoleon Bonaparte
The revolution of 1848 meant the end of king Louis Philippe's rule. The Second Republic was declared, and its Constitution gave much power to a directly elected President. When the election for the Presidency was held in late 1848, Louis Napoleon put forward his candidacy and he went on to win the election, becoming the Republic's President.

A candidate for vice president of the U.S. does not run separately. The VP candidate is selected as a running mate by the candidate for president, and they run as a team. Back in the beginning, they did run separately: the person with the most votes was president, and the one with the second most was vice president. That system didn't last very long; rivals who'd fought for election didn't usually team up too well. (But it could happen within a party!) A VP can run for president later if the person's party selects him or her as the candidate or if the person decides to run independently.
