In 1821, the town of Fredonia, New York, commerically drilled a well that produced natural gas from the Devonian Fredonia Shale formation.Devonian shale gas was generated from organic mud deposited specifically during the Devonian Period (geologic period and system of the Paleozoic Era spanning from . Most earlier Devonian Shale "plays" concentrated on shallower, high-organic zones, especially zones with high frequencies of natural fractures.
Years later, while digging for oil and gas in Upstate New York's Appalachian Basin, Donald Wallace III and his team of geologists discovered fields of Devonian black shale outcrops. They named these distinctive outcrops after the town they were found in, and so became the Marcellus Wallace Shale Formation (also classified as the Marcellus Wallace Subgroup of the Hamilton Group, Marcellus Wallace Member of the Romney Formation, or simply the Marcellus Shale)
