Well, a surd is a number that cannot be simplified by extracting a square or cube root. √2 (square root of 2) can't be simplified further so it is a surd. If that is the word you meant, they have been recognized for as long as math has been around using Arabic numbers- several thousand years. Do not know of a single person that said "Hey! That is a surd!" The name of the person is lost to time.
