Many historians cite September 11, 1862 as the first day of the Battle of Antietam. It is believed that forces under the command of Stonewall Jackson initiated the first attack and the first shots fired at Antietam.
IMPROVEMENT.
The first shots were fired by Gen. Hunt's Union batteries placed on the dominant high ground beyond the Antietam Creek, while Hooker's I Corps attacked the Confederate positions beyond the North Wood, at dawn of Sept.17, 1862, the day when the Battle of Antietam was fought.
The I Corps of the Army of Potomac, led by Maj. Gen. Hooker supported by its field artillery attacked first at the battle of Antietam.

During the American Civil War, the Battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862, after previous maneuvering and skirmishing by the large armies involved. The first shot of the battle likely came from one of the Union cannons covering the advance of troops of the I Corps (or, First Corps), commanded by Major General Joseph Hooker, down the Hagerstown Pike against entrenched Confederate defenders; or, from one of the Confederate cannons firing at those advancing Union troops as they began their early-morning attack.
it is the battle of Lexington and concord
The shot heard round the world was the first shot in Lexington. No one knew who shot it but it was the shot that started the battle at Lexington. ( I think the red coats shot it :)
Unknown to this day, but recently I read a plausible theory about why the shot may have been fired. There was a tavern nearby, and it was against the rules to bring a loaded musket inside. The only way to unload a musket was to fire it. Someone may have stepped inside for a drink, firing his musket in the air first. I think it unlikely that the British would have fired first without orders, but some of the Colonials may have panicked and fired when they heard the first shot.
The name of the person who fired the shot heard around the world is unknown. There is even some confusion as to whether the shot happened during the Battle of Concord or the Battle of Lexington. The one certainty is that the shot was fired on April 19, 1775.
