King John founded Liverpool as 'Livpul,' after issuing a letters patent on 28th August 1207 for the establishment of a new borough. It is thought that he wanted to establish a port in the area which was free from the control of The Earl of Chester. Before that a castle, built by the Normans, had existed in West Derby. (Not the castle which was built later in the 1230s)
