Nike was the brain child of Bill Bowerman, long time coach of the University of Oregon, and Phil Knight, one of Bowerman's athletes and graduate of UO.
The company was originally founded as Blue Ribbon Sports on 25 January 1964, and was originally backed by Japanese shoe manufacturer Tiger.
The current name of the company, Nike, is taken from the Greek goddess of victory, and the name was officially changed 30 May 1978.
