In 1799, a curious stone tablet was found in Egypt near a town called Rashid by the Arabs, and Rosetta by the French. The stone was engraved in three languages, one of which was ancient Greek, which was still readable; another was Egyptian hieroglyphics . Scholars eventually realized that the stone bore the same inscription in three languages, and that knowing the text in Greek could help them read the Egyptian on the stone.
