The San Carlos Mission (full name: Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo) was founded on June 3rd, 1770. The mission was established by Father Presidente Junipero Serra, a Majorcan Franciscan friar from Spain. It served as Alta California's first Christian confirmation, and although it was originally located in Monterey, it was moved in 1771 to Carmel-by-the-Sea. It is named after Saint Charles Borromeo, who was a cardinal, an Archbishop of Milan, and a great patron of education for priests.
