The broken mirror is the remains of Harry's 'Two Way Mirror' given to him by Sirius Black who had the other one. Sirius only gave Harry the mirror in the fifth book and the details were never explained in the film.

depends on which book you're talking about if its the mirror in the first book that mirror shows your desires Harry desires a family... But if you're talking about the mirror in the seventh book the one that Sirius gave him then Harry broke well that one is harder to explain... Go Harry Potter!!!
