All armies in WWII used some type of gas mask...The gas mask was invented in the 1800's and used for various jobs...they were also used in WWI when the Germans attacked the french with chlorine gas...for more information go to inventors.about.com
Well, I think that it was compulsory for men woman and children (in the army or not) to carry gas masks at all times, just in case there was a gas attack.
