Harvard was the first American college. It was founded in 1638.

However, since the colonies were at this point in history a part of the British Empire, Harvard was in fact not an "American" college, but only an "American" college by virtue of being located in the Americas. The first university, de facto "college", founded in North America was founded in Mexico City in 1551.

I did some research but the oldest university is Al-Azhar University, located in Cairo, Egypt. So I think that this was the first college in the world.
