The Pacific Army of Engineers was the first group that planned the construction. 1st. Lt. Zealous Tower Bates was then assigned to manage the building of the early fortifications at Alcatraz in 1854. Later modernizing efforts were done by other officials at various points, like Col. Reuben Turner who planned current cell house in 1909.

The prison building was built by military prisoners between 1909 - 1912. At that time, Alcataz Island was a military prison, not a federal prison. At the time it was built, it was the largest steel-reinforced concrete building in the world, though by today's standards, it's not very large.

Alcatraz island was named by Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775. He called it La Isla de los Alcatraces which translates as the island of the pelicans.

The Army. They built a fortress on the Island in the 1850's which was later converted in a Disciplinary Barracks and, finally by the Department of Justice, a federal penitentiary.
