They were Puritans and hated the hierarchy of the COE religion which the king was the head of meaning they hated the king. they did not want to abolish the monarchy meaning one ruler because they did not want a republic country they just wanted to replace the king in power and make him constitutional king.;
Charles closed Parliament because they refused to help him and give him the money he needed and they were gaining to much power. The parliament had a list of demands to get more power off the King. The kings anger at the Parliament was, one of the main triggers of the Civil War. Parliament's emergence became a check upon the power of the King of England. As Parliament's stature grew more and more powerful, the King's powers diminished. The King was no longer completely above the law as he had been before there was a Parliament. Although the common person did not have rights of voting for members of Parliament at first, the emergence of Parliament showed that the people the King governed had a say in how he governed. This also introduced the concept that governmental powers should be separated; that no one person or group should have total control over all the powers that a government has.
The estates general had 3 estates, commoners, clergy, and nobility. Parliament had 2, commoners and nobility. More important, the estates general had given the king the ability to levy taxes. Parliament never gave the king that authority. As a result the British Parliament met constantly because the king always needed money. The estates general stopped meeting after it gave the king the power to levy taxes. When things became a total mess and the laws needed to be changed, then King Louis xvi had to call a meeting of the Estates General. At that point things got out of hand and the French Revolution started.
The Whigs were a parliamentary tendency who agreed that parliament should have more power and the King, less.
King Charles I attempted to gain more sovereign power by refusing to call a Parliament together. He believed in the divine right of kings and thought he could govern without the consent of the people. This ultimately led to the English Civil War and his eventual defeat and execution.
