In the Americas, Stephen Foster and Scott Joplin helped set the stage for jazz and the verse-chorus-bridge structure of songs as we know them today. Of course, it is also hard to ignore the influence of Jewish music upon Gershwin, especially using sevenths to create tension. And of course, there was the music of his contemporaries on Tin Pan Alley in New York where he rose to prominence, although he has eclipsed them all.
