John Glenn was one of the original 7 Mercury astronauts and the 3rd American to venture into space as well as the first American to orbit the earth. Back in 1959, when he was chosen to become an astronaut, there was no one doing that line of work, so basically, no one inspired Glenn or the other Mercury astronauts. They had to inspire themselves. They were inspired by a desire to fly higher, faster, and further than was possible with the aircraft being flown at that time.
