When were dungarees invented?
Dungarees as a clothing item first made it's appearance in the English language in 1696. It was a twill material that was cheap, came in blue and was tough. Various navies used the material from Dongri Killa to make sails and the sailors made clothing from them. The color Denim is used to denote the color that came through the port of Nimes in France. So now we have a blue twill fabric that sailors made into Pantaloons. The product was cheap, durable, and repairable which was a boon to sailors who spend months at sea and needed clothing that could be mended. In the 1850's Levi Strauss and a tailor named Jacob Davis discovered that the stress points of such pants could be reinforced with rivets. They were granted a patent and formed the Levi Strauss and company who holds the patent today. Dungarees do not strictly mean pants made of denim. They can be any material which is sturdy, repairable, and practical. These pants are made to be work clothes and their appeal is in their durability. Cotton duck, cotton twill, corduroy, or any heavy cloth can be used to make the work pants known as dungarees. The dungaree is made to be durable, easy to clean and mendable. A good pair of work dungarees can last several years as opposed to dress clothing which is not designed for working conditions.
