Skills testing has been around since the Mayans. A young boy would be taught hunting skills and then sent off to hunt to use the skills. If he came back with the carcass of the animal he was accepted and a man. The idea of testing in schools has always been part of the way teaching is undertaken. Record show right back to early Egyptians that a child, normally from a well to do family was taught number and their own language. Number skills were then tested to make sure that the young person could actually count. This has progressed to home tuition. Henry the Eighth was tested by his tutors in Latin as this was very much still in the English language.
