There is debate on who invented the first laboratory thermometer especially since there different kinds invented at different times. However, many think the credit should go to Italian professor, doctor, and physiologist Sanctorius for the air thermometer in 1612.
There appear to be several answers. In 1724 Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the Mercury thermometer. And in 1625 Santorio invented the mouth thermometer.

Clinical thermometers are not used to measure the temperature of boiling water! They have a range of about 35oC to 43oC and they will explode at a temperature of about 100oC! Ordinary laboratory thermometers are used.
