Popsicles were invented by an 11 year old boy by complete accident.
Frank Epperson of San Francisco, in 1905, was mixing up powder flavouring with soda and water on his front porch. He was called in the house by his mother to go to bed, so he did so, leaving the wooden stirring stick in his mixture outside.
Overnight, the temperatures dropped to below freezing.
In the morning, Frank was confronted with the frozen mixture, which he picked up by the stick and daringly licked it.
He kept this secret to himself and his family.
In 1922 he made more of them on purpose this time and took them to a ball at a local fire station. People loved them so much that, in 1923, Frank began to sell them professionally at a stall on Neptune beach, advertised as "frozen drinks on a stick". Later he renamed them to Epperson Icicle Pop.
Later on in his life, his children began to call them "popsicles" instead of icicle pops. He liked "popsicle" so much that he, again, renamed them to just that.
