The QWERTY design is based on a layout created by Christopher Latham Sholes in 1873 for the Sholes and Glidden typewritter and sold it to Remington in that same year. It became popular with the success of the Remington No. 2 and No. 3 and No. 389 of 1878, and remains in use on electronic keyboards due to the network effect of a standard layout and a belief that alternatives fail to provide very significant advantages.

QWERTY is the keypad known in mobile phones. It is called QWERTY because the letters QWERTY come next to each other when typing in a mobile phone keypad or a computer keyboard. Christopher Sholes, the American was the first man to invent the so called QWERTY keypad. The need for him to invent it developed when he was working for a newspaper. When his colleagues went on strike, he tried to invent a typesetting machine which could help him in his work and not rely on his people. In 1866, with Samuel Soule he also invented a device which could number pages easily.
