Styrofoam, which is a brand name for a type of expanded polystyrene foam (EPS), was invented by researchers at the Dow Chemical Company in the United States. The invention of Styrofoam is credited to Ray McIntire, a researcher at Dow, who discovered a method for extruding polystyrene foam in 1941. McIntire's invention revolutionized the packaging industry and led to the widespread use of Styrofoam for insulation, packaging, and other applications. Dow Chemical began producing and selling Styrofoam insulation panels in the late 1940s, and it quickly became a popular material due to its lightweight, insulating properties, and versatility. However, it's important to note that Styrofoam is a trademarked brand name owned by Dow Chemical, and the term "styrofoam" is often used colloquially to refer to any expanded polystyrene foam, regardless of the manufacturer.

Dow's Chemical Physics Lab, led by Ray McIntire "rediscovered" the method to make Styrofoam, but it was first discovered by Carl Georg Munters. Dow's Chemical Physics Lab acquired exclusive rights to the patents though.
