The word parasol was synonymous with umbrella during its early history. Archaeologists have discovered bas relief in Nineveh showing he parasol. It is held by a servant over the head of the king to protect him from the sun's heat. Except for the connecting curtain, it looks a lot like the modern day umbrella.

Umbrellas, or parasols, were invented to block rain or sunlight. They dated back to thousands of years ago. They were used in multiple countries- yet were commonly used to shade the King or ruler from rain or sunlight. Nowadays, in rainy or even sunny climates, all people have umbrellas in case of a rainy (or sunny?) day.
