His machine was the first capable of performing basic arithmetic functions.
American physicist John Atanasoff built the first electronic computer in the late 1930s and early 1940s, although his invention was relatively unknown and most credit for the first computer went to the people who built ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) for the United States military in the 1940's.
