The portable cell phone was invented by Martin Cooper at Motorola in 1971.
The cell phone was invented by D.H. (Doug) Ring at Bell Labs in 1947, but A.T.&T. did not try building them until the late 1960s and never planned on building cell phones smaller than the trunk of a car.
