All societies have months. The word comes from the word moon. Originally the Month was the same as a Moon. A month began with the new moon. There was a problem. The lunar year and the solar year are different. If people plant their crops by moons, they will plant earlier and earlier each year. Some groups get around this difficulty by having a separate secular and religious calendar. The Muslims gain a religious year every 33 years. The Jews celebrate the new year after the fall equinox. Every now and then, they throw in another month.

Julius Caesar decided to take the Moon away from the Month. Instead, he would make the Month a little longer than the Lunar Month. He would have 12 of them in a year. Every 4 years he would have a leap year. So he created the present system.
