Hargreaves is generally credited with inventing the spinning jenny, a late 18th century modification of the spinning wheel to make multiple threads/yarns at once. The wheelitself is thought to be roughly a 1000 years older! It was brought to Europe in the 13th century (some 500 years before Hargreaves was born) and had been documented in China and India some 100s of years before that. The exact date of the spinning wheel's invention is unknown, and, since there are multiple versions, might have been invented in more than one place or time.
