History

The first Trident gum was manufactured in 1960. It was a sugared gum that was designed to combat tartar on the teeth. The "tri" in the name signifies three enzymes it contained that were said to dissolve the tartar, and the "dent" alerted consumers that it was designed for dental health. Trident Goes Sugar-FreeThe Trident recipe was converted to a sugar-free formula in 1964, replacing the sugar with saccharine. It was the only national brand of gum at the time that did not use sugar. This first incarnation of modern Trident was a pink gum shaped into small rectangular pieces. Over the years the formula was tweaked to include not only xylitol but sorbitol, Aspartame and other sugar substitutes.
