Hades was the ruler of Tartarus and the Underworld. Though Hades is the God of the Dead, he is not the God of Death. Hades eventually became known (incorrectly) as a name for the Underworld itself.
Hades is fierce and jealous of his property. He rarely visits the upper land, and thus, has little knowledge of the affairs of the other Gods.
It was Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades- three brothers- who divided the planet into thirds. Zeus took control of the air, Poseiden the sea, and the Underworld was left to Hades. They could not claim the earth itself, as that was the Goddess Mother Earth (the first to emerge from Chaos and the mother of Uranus).
Hades kidnapped Persephone (previously named Core), daughter of Zeus and Demeter, to be his wife. Demeter was distraught and refused to fulfill her duties as Goddess of Argiculture and Plantlife until her daughter was returned to her. Demeter refused to let any trees bear fruit or any other form of plant life to grow, so Zeus allowed Demeter to take Core back before the human race became extinct. His condition: Core could return so long as she hadn't taken part of any of the food of the dead. She had, however, eaten seven pomagranate seeds from the Garden of Hades (as the garden keeper reported). Thus, Persephone had to stay in Tartarus for six months out of every year.
Zeus, Poseidon and Hades divided the world between them, and this is what Hades got.
