As of April 21th 2012, Japan's Prime Minister is Yoshihiko Noda (野田 佳彦 : Noda Yoshihiko). He has been in office as well as serving as head of the Democratic Party of Japan or DPJ since September 2nd of 2011, following the resignation of his predecessor, Naoto Kan, from both offices. Prior to his election, Noda served as the Minister of Finance under his predecessor, who had also moved from that Ministry seat to the top post.

The current Emperor of Japan and nominal head of state is His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor Akihito (明仁). He has been on the throne since January 7th 1989. Following his death, the Emperor will be known as Emperor Heisei (平成) as according to the tradition of the emperors since the Emperor Meiji being posthumously given a teigō(帝号) based on the name of their era of reign.
Currently the Prime Minister of Japan is Shinzo Abe .
