Murtagh first appeared in the book while Eragon, Brom and Saphira were being held captive by the Ra'zac. His surprise attack was enough to scare off the Ra'zac. After Brom dies from wounds suffered during Murtaghs rescue Murtagh accompanies Eragon through the rest of the book. If you want to know more, read the book. Then read the next two books because Murtagh is also in those but his character changes a bit.

Through Eldest and Brisingr, he is one of the main antagonist (besides Galbatorix). He is the murderer of Oromis and Glaedr and in Inheritance, he is the love interest of Nasuada.
