In 1799, a soldier started digging a fort near the Nile. He found a black stone with three types of writing on it. The top portion had hieroglyphs, the middle had a different form of hieroglyphs, and the bottom portion had Greek writing. Because the meaning of hieroglyphs had been lost about 200 years before, many scholars couldn't figure it out.In the 1820's, a young French scholar named Jean Francois Champollion cracked the code. He found out that this stone was made to honor King Ptolemy V. Since this discovery was found, it opened a new window onto the world of the ancient Egyptians.
