Amerigo Vespucci (spelled Americus Vespucci in Latin) was an Italian navigator who made four voyages to the Americas between 1499 and 1502. Two accounts of his explorations and maps were published between 1502 and 1504, and a world map published in 1507 by cartographer Martin Waldseemuller named the new continent America in his honor.
Amerigo Vespucci was an Italian explorer, financier, navigator and cartographer who first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia's eastern outskirts as initially conjectured from Columbus ' voyages, but instead constituted an entirely separate landmass hitherto unknown to Afro-Eurasians.Colloquially referred to as the New World, this second super continent came to be termed " America ", deriving its name from Americus, the Latin version of Vespucci's first name.

The book's given explanation simply states that "Amerigo" would be the Italian name, and "Americus" is the Latinized version of the same name. I have also seen another account of the changed name attributed to being his grandfather's name. My early school recollection of 40 years ago is how fortunate we are to be known for his "first" name as opposed to the family name. Imagine, North and South Vespucci, or the Vespuccian continent........The United States of Vespucci? It could have been! poor old Robert
